Flight Fishing for Char & Sheefish
Flight- fishing Adventures are the best way to see grizzly bear, black bear, wolves, moose, caribou and Dall sheep in their natural habitat en route to the fishing hole.
We currently offer fly-out fishing adventures for both Sheefish (Stendous leucichthys) and Arctic Char (Salvelinus alpinus). Begin the day with a 45-minute flight to the Kobuk River, slow-moving and 100 yards across in most places, it is the home of the mighty Sheefish. Your privately chartered floatplane flight covers 80 miles of sparkling rivers, lakes and rugged mountains before landing within a few feet of the fishing hole.
Sheefish, also known as Inconnu, range from 20-50 pounds and are caught on heavy, sinking flies and large, flashy spinners. They begin spawning in mid to late July in the Kobuk River, so best fishing times are early August to mid-September. Sheefish are one of the best kept sport fish secrets of the north, combining superb fishing, clean water and stunning scenery. The day ends with your return flight to Iniakuk Lake Wilderness Lodge where hot showers and cold drinks await.
Arctic Char are another sport fish unique to the north country. The Arctic Char Flight-seeing Adventure takes you and your guide to a small lake 3,300 feet above sea level surrounded by peaks overlooking Alaska’s North Slope. Resident Arctic Char and Lake Trout are available any time during the summer season with the best fishing during the month of August.
Wet a fly line, cast a few spinners, or just stretch your legs in remote caribou country far above tree line and way off the beaten path. All licenses are included with your trip as well as spin casting gear and tackle. We do not supply fly fishing gear but do carry a wide variety of local fly patterns.
