Arrigetch Peaks Wilderness Cabin

Iniakuk Lake Wilderness Lodge is the only luxury wilderness lodge offering privately-owned accommodations at our wilderness cabins within the Gates of the Arctic National Park. These vacation destinations are for adventurous, independent travelers. We provide a guide for every group at any fitness level and adjust all services to suit individual needs. Each booking offers exclusive use of the facilities.

The Arrigetch Peaks Wilderness cabin could have starred in “Jeremiah Johnson” with Robert Redford. It is surrounded by 5,000 foot (1500m) peaks with views of 7,000 (2100m) and 8,000 foot (2400m) peaks just a few miles away.

The cabin was hand built with local logs on the edge of the National Wild and Scenic Alatna River, 85 miles (135 km) above the Arctic Circle. It is a perfect destination for a couple or family of four. The murmuring of the Alatna River will lull you to sleep as a fire crackles in the wood stove. There are no indoor plumbing facilities – a nice privy is out back and wash water is heated in the cabin. Separate accommodations for your guide nearby ensure your safety and privacy while allowing us to cater to your needs.

We offer a selection of delicious meals and desserts selected by Iniakuk Lake Wilderness Lodge and customized to accompany each trip. Each night your guide prepares home-cooked meals served family-style at the dining table beneath a large picture window offering a spectacular view of the river and mountains. No freeze-dried food at this table and no chance that the telephone will interrupt your meal.

Reservations here are increasingly popular among couples wanting to combine comfort and privacy with their wilderness trip. Black and grizzly bears, wolves, caribou and moose roam the land, and if you don’t spot them from the dinner table, you will see their tracks along the riverbanks and sandbars.

The location is ideal for exploring the heart of the Brooks Range. Your guide will take you high into the surrounding mountains, deep into lush forests, or merely keep the fire stoked as you relax with a good book in the unbroken silence of Gates of the Arctic National Park. The local peaks take 2-3 hours to summit but offer stunning views within 20-30 minutes once above tree line. Bring your camera, plenty of film, watercolors and sketchbook.

The approach to the cabin is along the river. We fly in ten miles upriver of the cabin, then spend a leisurely four hours floating down the Alatna River to the Arrigetch Peaks Cabin in inflatable canoes. The Alatna River is calm and peaceful and requires no paddling experience, you can relax and let the current do the work. We spend one or two nights at the cabin, then float downriver another five miles to a pick-up site for the return flight to Iniakuk Lake Lodge or Bettles depending on itineraries.
